Zarafshan is a small mining town in the Kyzylkum Desert region of Uzbekistan. The proverbial middle of nowhere. There aren’t many attractions or amusements. One thing that comes through town is a traveling zoo. The zoo is a collection of brightly painted tractor trailer cars full of animals. The trailers, maybe about ten, are pulled into an empty lot, circled around to create an encampment and then the zoo is opened for business. There are no enclosures, no expansive, natural environments for the animals. Just the trailer cars with cages, opened for simple, temporary and cheap spectacle. The saddest zoo on Earth.
